More than a thousand runners flocked to West Ham Park on Sunday (
15th April) to compete and fundraise in the Newham Classic 10k Run
2012. The annual run, in its fourth year, attracted runners from
all walks of life, organised by the Tessa Sanderson Foundation and
Academy (TSFA) in partnership with Newham College London and
energy company Saudi Aramco
The start of the race was marked
by Ronnie Cooper, 85, a boxer in the 1948 Olympic Games who flagged
off the event at 9am. The winner of the race was Mehretab Soloman,
22, from Kenya while the fastest woman was Faye Fullerton, 28, from
Havering Mayesbrook .
Notable names taking part this year included 101-year-old Fauja Singh, the oldest participant in the race, who was running the Newham Classic 10k for the third time. Hailing from Ilford, Fauja also ran the Toronto Marathon last year. He says the secret to his extraordinary health and stamina is “ginger, curry, and tea”.
Visitors from outside of Newham raced to West Ham Park with runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, USA, Germany, Sweden and Norway taking part. The speediest competitor from Newham College was Stephen Smith, 59.
Tessa, who has organised the race since 2009, said: “The day was a truly memorable one for the massive participation in the run for good cause. “I am so proud that TSFA is now fully established as part of the Newham community, working with mainly young sports people and Newham College of Further Education to help our community progress even further. “I could not have achieved the success of the Newham Classic 10k run without the residents’ help. “Visitors and locals are now taking part and running for so many different causes. Thank you for your support.”
