2010

The race that has been dubbed ‘Running with Olympians’ thanks to the involvement of Olympic gold medallist, Tessa Sanderson and some of her fellow former athletes, today (18th April) witnessed a new World Record made by Fauja Singh who, at 99, has set a new time for his age group by completing the distance in 1 hour 15mins.

Following its launch in 2009, this year’s Newham Classic 10K attracted over 1500 runners including Olympic silver medallist, Sharron Davies and the 2008 British Olympic Judo Team.

Singh said ‘I am really pleased with my run and to break a World Record is fantastic. I hope to return next year and beat my own record.’
Tessa added ‘I am so impressed by what Fauja achieved here today; we saw elite athletes, fun runners and families as well as stars from past Olympic Games run but Fauja has been simply inspirational! I can’t wait to see everyone back again next year and let’s see if we can set a few more records then!’

2009

Inaugural Newham Classic 10k Run was the first competitive competition
held in the new 2012 Olympic Park on April 19, 2009.

The event was open to runners of all standards from around the UK and several from abroad.

With the framework of the 2012 Olympic Stadium in the background, over 1000 runners took part in the race.

The Newham 10K was created by 1984 Olympic javelin champion Tessa Sanderson and included various celebrities Michael Watson, Jim Rosantle, along with the CEO of the London Olympics, Mr Paul Deighton.

The 10K race gave the runners the chance to witness first hand the view of the Olympic Stadium and the surrounding developments in the new Olympic Park.

In the end it was Florian Neuschwander from Germany who won the main race in a time of 30 minutes and 14 seconds while Charlotte Peppiatt of Benfleet Running Clud won the women's 10k with a timing of 39min 33sec.

The race give competitors a first glimpse of the emerging Olympic park where in 2012 many dreams will be realised or dashed.

This race was supporting Community Links, a community-based charity running project in East London. Founded in 1977, they help thousands of vulnerable children, young people and adults every year, with most of their work being delivered in locally in Newham.
